"A selection of photos made for a book about public safety in the city of Roermond"
Roermond in the Netherlands is the city where I have my daytime job. It is a beautiful city with lots of historical buildings and monuments. Very popular among tourists and people that like to shop. But what most people don't know, is that Roermond has big social problems. Problems that normaly only big cities like Amsterdam have. Such as a high unemployment rate, poverty and neighbourhoods with high count of social problems.
In august 2005 I was asked to do a photo-report on the social problems the city has and the way the city council tackles them and keeps the environment of the people that live in the city safe.
It was a project that was not easy, considering the short time I had to finish it.
On this page you can find a selection of the photos I made for the project.
The complete project was published in a photobook that was printed in a small circulation.

These old houses are waiting for the demolition crew. The last couple of years they where used by local artists as galleries and working ateliers, since nobody could live in them anymore. This is one of the community projects to revitalize the old suburbs, where mostly poor and unemployed people live.
