Chitzen Itza - april 2007
The Yucatan peninsula is famous for it's heavenly beaches but also for numerous ancient Maya cities. The most know is probably Chitzen Itza wich pyramide is an Icon like the ones in Egypt. The site is uterly tourist infested, but if you come at opening time, you have the site almost for yourself since the touringcars from Cancun and Playa del Carmen arive between 9 and 8 PM. Ek Balam is a lesser known site, but is really worth a visit. It lies in the middle of the jungel and from the top of the highest pyramide you actually can see as far as Coba and Chitzen Itza, wich pyramides are little dots on the horizon. Tulum isn't actually a city, more a fort. It is one of the few Maya settlements by the sea and the main building is on a big cliff overlooking the sea. Truly a ancient paradise. But the small site fills up reall quickly, so you have to get up early to get some shots without hordes of peoples climbing the ruins!
