| The Antelope Canyons, nearby the city of Page AZ, are probably the most beautyfull slotcanyons of the world.
The everchanging light, beautyfull textures and sculptures made by nature are unbelievable. Antelope Canyon drains from the south into Lake Powell and is located on either side of Highway 98 about five miles out of Page. This highway devides the upper and lower part of the canyon.
We have visited the Upper Canyon in 2001 and the Lower Canyon in 2002 and we're hooked ever since. The hours we spend in this almost cave-like wonders are the highlights of our 2 trips to the USA.
Lower Antelope is a long, very deep slot canyon of mesmerizing beauty. A more challenging slot than Upper Antelope. It is entered through a slit in the rocks at ground level, where a series of ladders take you to the bottom of the gorge. The ground is rocky and uneven, there are usually muddy areas here and there, and the canyon’s twists, bends, and narrow passageways trap debris in piles that can be difficult to get through. You need hiking boots and a good sense of adventure to fully enjoy this slot canyon.
The Upper Antelope Canyon is also known as the Corkscrew and it is one of the easiest slotcanyons to visit, since you’ll be driven right up to the entrance and there is no height difference to be climbed in the canyon. This makes it an very popular tourist attraction, and you will most likely not be alone in there. If you want to make longexposure photo's it can be very frustrating! If you want to visit this part, be sure you go off-season and not during the weekend.
You must have a permit, called a "Navajo Permit" or "Entry Permit" to enter Upper and Lower Antelope. It can be bought at the canyon entries. In Page there a several companies that offer guided tours to the canyons.
