The Pera Palas Hotel is amongst the most legendary hotels of the world. It opened in 1892 as a reststop for travellers of the famous Orient Express. It hasn't change a bit since the opening. In the Grand Orient Bar cocktails are served under the origal chandelier and in the tres chique Patisserie you can enjoy delicious cakes and pastery.
In its rich history it housed famous guest as Mata Hari, Greta Garbo, Ernest Hemingway, Ataturk and Josephine Baker. But the hotel is most famous for the fact that Agatha Christie lived here and wrote her bestseller "Murder on the Orient Express" in one of the rooms. The former room of Mrs. Christie is now turned into a small museum and can be visited upon request.
Although its historic past and (ancient) luxery, it is a nice and affordable place for a short stay in Istanbul. The smaller rooms are even affordable for travellers with a small budget. The historic suites are ofcourse very pricy. |
