This enormous underground waterreservoir is one of the most obscure architecture in Istanbul.
It was build in 532 by Justianus to secure the watersuply of the big palace at the Hippodrome. It was one of the biggest secrets of the city.
The Osman conquerers only discovered it a century after their victory when they saw people fishing thru a whole in there cellarfloor. At least thats how the legend goes...
Nowadays its a big tourist attraction. Visitors can "enjoy" classical music when they wander thru the cisterne.
Photographers tip:
Don't use a flash but bring a tripod. And watch out for the extreme humidity. |
