Contrary to the name, these buildings were not build by the Aztec Indians of South America.
The site was named by early settlers, who were inspired by the conquest of Cortez in Mexico.
Aztec is together with Chaco, one of the larges structures build by ancient pueblo indians. Dated around 1100, the main part of the site is the West Ruin, wich once contained more than 300 rooms and was three stories high.
The great Kiva was excavated in 1921 and rebuilt in 1934. It is the only reconstructed great kiva in the South West.
The park is located in New Mexico, northwest of the city of Aztec, near the junction of US550 and NM516. About an hour drive from the Mesa Verde National Park. |
